Our Estate Vineyard

By far, our largest source of grapes is our own property. Our 350-acre estate presently includes 77 acres of vines planted with 18 different varietals ranging from Albarino to Zinfandel. The San Domingo Creek flows through the valley floor tempering the warm summer days. Varied elevations, strategic vineyard placements and a soil rich in limestone mineral deposits all contribute to a unique and special "terrior".

Soil
Just as the land around the winery is rich in gold and other precious metals, it is also rich in limestone and iron, creating an incredible soil that is the envy of our fellow vintners. In the same ground that hopeful miners once searched for gold, we are now able to grow some of the most sought-after fruit in the region. The calcium that is in the limestone enables our vineyards to pull out and absorb more nutrients from the ground on a consistent basis; ensuring that our fruit matures in balance with the flavors. This balance is further maintained by the high iron content in the soil, making flavors more complex and colors incredibly vibrant. As a result, our red varietals demonstrate deep, earthy, Burgundian undertones, while our whites show a lovely, crisp, fruit driven quality.
